Most pet cemeteries are privately owned and you will make all arrangements directly with the cemetery owners when arranging a formal burial for your pet.

How can I verify the integrity of my pet's formal burial?

There are several things you must do to assure yourself that your pet's burial will be handled and performed properly. First, you must require the cemetery to provide you with a full disclosure agreement which will define all the information you need to decide whether or not you want to bury your pet in this particular cemetery.

It is also very important to inspect the quality of the caskets and markers provided by the cemetery because the quality of these products can vary dramatically from one cemetery to another.

Second, you must ask for a copy of their burial agreement, which will give you a detailed list of information about the terms and conditions for burying your pet in that particular cemetery. The types of information that should be listed on the burial agreement are as follows:

The name of the cemetery
Your name and address, telephone number, e-mail
Your pet's name
The section your pet will be buried in and a lot #
Fee information, such as when payment is due
Continual care amount and maintenance account information
Rules and regulations
Burial and/or lot restrictions
The grave decorations
Visitation and visitors responsibility
Violation of rules or regulations
Do pet owners have perpetual rights to my pet’s grave?

These are just a few things that need to be addressed in a burial agreement. Currently most pet cemeteries do not give any type of burial contract or agreement to the pet owner.
